Course Content
This is a beginners course, it is for individuals with little or no previous experience, it will explore all the basics required to restore or upcycle a piece of furniture.
Week 1
Choosing a suitable piece of furniture, creating mood boards, planning, scope and sequence of work. Safety while working.
Week 2
Tools and techniques. A look at the basic tools required to complete a project as well as exploring some traditional specialised tools, that you may not have considered.
Week 3
Basic woodworking, fixings, sawing, marking out, types of woods, veneers.
Week 4
Preparing your project, removing old paints, lacquers and upholstery. Disassembly or reassembly ! Some projects may require reassembly if joints have become loose, gluing, clamping or reassembly techniques will be demonstrated.
Week 5
Preparing surfaces. Preparation of surfaces is vital to achieving good results.
Week 6
Painting finishes and effects.
Week 7
Basic Upholstery tools and techniques
Week 8
Reassembly of projects, fixing, gluing, clamping, jointing.
Week 9
Natural Finishes, an introduction to natural finishes, ebonising, fuming, Shou Sugi Ban.
Week 10
Completion of project, open discussion, review of participants own work “show and tell”.
