FASCINATORS & MILLINERY FOR BEGINNERS with Lina Stein
COURSE OVERVIEW:
This evening course is designed for individuals with little or no prior experience in millinery (hat-making) who are interested in exploring this ancient craft and creating their own handmade hats in an easy-going atmosphere. Under the guidance of World-renowned millinery tutor Lina Stein, participants will learn the basics of millinery techniques, materials, and design, providing them with the skills and knowledge needed to create unique custom-made headwear for all occasions.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Introduce students to the history and fundamentals of millinery including equipment & materials - Provide hands-on instruction and notes in basic hat-making techniques (both traditional and modern) - Develop design skills for creating functional and stylish hats using Sinamay - Enable students to create at least 3 wearable hats by the end of the course.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
- Introduction to Millinery, the history, traditional tools, hat-making materials and modern design concepts
- Learn to understand what shape hat suit your face and how to wear it
- How to keep the headpiece on the head securely via a comb, a headband or base with elastic etc.
- Discover the wonders of Millinery Sinamay: One of the main hat making foundations used by making at 3 types of hats;

- Blocking techniques: Learn how to create a variety of hat bases by shaping your materials over vintage wooden ‘blocks’ supplied by Lina Stein
- How to stabilise your hat and creation by Wiring: Learn traditional methods to attach millinery wire and give structure and strength to headpieces/fascinators
- Trimmings: Loops, beading & Veiling: How to tailor veiling to create vintage styles, add crinoline loops and sinamay bows, curls to create a stunning headpiece
ABOUT TUTOR:
Lina Stein is an Australian born Milliner & Hatter who lives and works in Westport, Co. Mayo. She specialises in quality hand-made head-wear for HIM & HER and offers Millinery Workshops to eager hatters of all levels. Lina Stein has her background in "Classic Theatrical Millinery". This has provided her with the unique expertise to unite traditional hat-making know-how with modern design, creating hats of great sophistication and clean lines.
For more than three decades Lina’s life has been made of hats, ribbons, straws and felts and the sharing of her valuable skillset. Her presence signals a dynamic that is diverse and exposes her clients to new and joyous experiences. She is recognised as a leading light in the international world of Millinery and regularly tutors at leading International hat making conferences/events/forums such as London Hatweek, Millinery Meetup(USA), IMF (Australia)
