Course Overview
Physiotherapy Assistant Theory QQI Level 5 is a minor component award.
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work effectively and offer support to a physiotherapist in a clinical environment.
Learning Outcomes
- Summarise the roles and responsibilities of a physiotherapy assistant and of a chartered physiotherapist
- Explain the role of important anatomical systems
- Apply knowledge gained to recognise a range of common medical conditions
- Practice the skills required to support the client in all aspects of the physiotherapy intervention
- Identify the skills required to support therapeutic handling in a range of physiotherapy interventions
- Practice therapeutic handling in a range of physiotherapy interventions
- Reflect on relationships with client relatives and multidisciplinary team members and interpersonal issues that arise in physiotherapy interventions
- Reflect on personal effectiveness as a physiotherapy assistant to include own strengths and weakness
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and provide enhanced quality care and support
Assessment Techniques
In order to demonstrate that they have reached the standards of knowledge, skill and competence identified in all the learning outcomes, learners are required to complete the assessment(s) below.
Programme validation will require providers to map each learning outcome to its associated assessment technique. All learning outcomes must be assessed and achieved in accordance with the minimum intended module learning outcomes set out in the validated programme.

Learner Record A learner record is the learner's self-reported and self-reflective record in which he/she describes specific learning experiences, activities, responses and skills acquired.
Examination - Theory An examination provides a means of assessing a learner's ability to recall and apply knowledge, skills and understanding within a set period of time and under clearly specified conditions. A theory-based examination assesses the ability to recall, apply and understand specific theory and knowledge.
Assignment An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a brief with specific guidelines as to what should be included. An assignment is usually of short duration and may be carried out over a specified period of time.
