Course Overview
Purpose
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to work in a supportive role in the area of rehabilitation, physical disability or dysfunction in a domestic or institutional setting.
Learning Outcomes
- Discuss posture, to include a definition of normal posture, the importance of postural alignment to achieve optimum function and the effects of clinical conditions on gait and balance
- Explain concepts and common terms used in the physiotherapy field, to include levels of mobility, nonweight, partial and full weight bearing
- Summarise the benefits of a range of therapeutic interventions to include exercise therapy, strengthening, range of movement, hydrotherapy
- Discuss the importance of providing appropriate feedback to clinical staff
- Practise a range of related risks, safety procedures and techniques to ensure the safety of both client and therapist during therapy, to include use and adjustment of physiotherapy equipment and mobility aids, client transfers and mobilisation, manual handling of client and equipment, and equipment maintenance
- Execute safe mobilising of clients of all weight bearing abilities, to include supportive positioning of affected body parts using appropriate equipment
- Work independently to control the stock of physiotherapy equipment
- Implement a range of actions to ensure clients can understand and are motivated to cooperate in, their own treatment and therapy, either as part of a group or on an individual level
Assessment Techniques
In order to demonstrate that they have reached the standards of knowledge, skill and competence identified in all the learning outcomes, learners are required to complete the assessment(s) The assessor is responsible for devising assessment instruments (e.g. project and assignment briefs, examination papers), assessment criteria and mark sheets, consistent with the techniques identified below and QQI’s assessment requirements.
Programme validation will require providers to map each learning outcome to its associated assessment technique. All learning outcomes must be assessed and achieved in accordance with the minimum intended module learning outcomes set out in the validated programme.

A project is a response to a brief devised by the assessor. A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may
involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical
activity or production of an artefact or event.
Skills Demonstration
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A
skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Merit 65% - 79%
Distinction 80% - 100%

A Physiotherapy Assistant works with a Chartered Physiotherapist to assess and treat clients whose movement is restricted by illness, injury, disability or age. They implement the therapy programme created by a Physiotherapist and support the client in restoring or improving their mobility.
